Transforming Communities: HBP USM Champions UCSR Initiative for Primary School Upgrades

On June 23, 2025, Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) Construction Project Management (CPM) programme, part of the School of Housing, Building, and Planning (HBP), executed a University Corporate Social Responsibility (UCSR) project aimed at improving the learning environment at SK Jalan Residensi in Georgetown, Penang. The initiative was spearheaded by Associate Professor Dr. Radzi Ismail.

Project Involvement and Stakeholders

The UCSR project involved second-year CPM students and lecturers from HBP, along with various stakeholders, including the non-governmental organization Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia (PKMM) and two governmental bodies: the Contractor Service Centre (PKK) and Akademi Binaan Malaysia (ABM).

Activities and Goals

Activities within the project included hydroponics, herbaponics, landscaping, mural painting, and refurbishment of classrooms, all intended to promote sustainable practices and creativity among students. The initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically advocating for quality education (SDG 4), sustainable communities (SDG 11), and partnerships for shared objectives (SDG 17), encapsulated in the theme “UCSR: Towards a Sustainable Future.”

Student Participation and Practical Learning

Participation from various contributors was notable, with USM students and faculty members engaging in landscape design, classroom painting, mural production, and assisting contractors with planting in the school’s herb garden. Furthermore, they proposed future applications for hydroponics to support the school’s initiative of cultivating green, self-sustaining food sources.

Role of PKMM and Training Provided

PKMM played a crucial role by undertaking more complex physical tasks, such as garden renovations and pathway repairs, which enhanced the functionality and aesthetics of the landscape. Their involvement provided students with practical insights into professional construction techniques.

To ensure industry standards were met, ABM provided training for USM students and contractors on painting and landscaping methods. Moreover, PKK facilitated cooperation among the stakeholders, fostering effective communication between USM and various parties involved in the project. SK Jalan Residensi also contributed by supplying necessary tools, equipment, and meals, creating a supportive environment for the volunteers.

Outcomes of the UCSR Initiative

The UCSR initiative resulted in significant improvements to the facilities at SK Jalan Residensi while highlighting the importance of collaboration across sectors in achieving sustainability objectives. The partnership among academic institutions, industry representatives, governmental entities, and the local school community exemplifies a shared commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility, setting a framework for similar future initiatives that can benefit both communities and the environment.
