SNU Alumna Park Hyanghee Named MIT Rising Stars in EECS 2025

Park Hyanghee, an alumna of Seoul National University (SNU), has been selected to participate in the 2025 Rising Stars in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) workshop. The workshop is set to take place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Boston University on October 30 and 31. Currently serving as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Park stands out as one of the few participants from the social sciences in a program predominantly focused on engineering, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary research.

Background and Education

Park obtained her PhD in Communication with an emphasis on Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) from SNU. Her research has been recognized for its focus on addressing sociotechnical challenges associated with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse environments into society. During the workshop, she plans to present findings related to significant AI applications, including tools aimed at assisting with performance evaluations and documenting cases of sexual assault. Her work employs multi-level, human-centered methodologies to investigate the interactions between technological systems and real-world practices.

Significance of Participation

As the only South Korean scholar in the 2025 cohort, Park’s inclusion signifies the increasing global recognition of interdisciplinary research that connects social sciences and HCI. This acknowledgment underscores SNU’s commitment to promoting cross-disciplinary scholarship and highlights the valuable contributions that diverse academic backgrounds can make within the fields of engineering and technology.
