Nazarbayev University Showcases Sporting Excellence with West Asia Swimming Championship
Nazarbayev University (NU) made sporting history by hosting the AOSI West Asia Swimming Championship, marking the first time the prestigious regional competition has been staged in Kazakhstan. The event welcomed around 450 young swimmers representing Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, India, Iran, Thailand, Russia, and Malaysia, highlighting the growing international profile of aquatic sports in the region.
Organised by the iSwim Academy in partnership with Global Aquatics, the championship showcased emerging talent while fostering friendship and sportsmanship among young athletes from across Asia. The selection of NU as the host venue reflected the university’s world-class sporting facilities and its commitment to supporting international sporting events.
Opening the championship, NU Vice President Kadisha Dairova welcomed participants and encouraged them to pursue both academic and athletic excellence. She expressed confidence that many of the competitors could become future Olympic champions and invited them to consider Nazarbayev University for their higher education.
Secretary General of the Kazakhstan Swimming Sports Federation and 2016 Olympic champion Dmitriy Balandin also addressed the athletes, describing the championship as an important milestone in strengthening Kazakhstan’s international sporting presence. He encouraged participants to view the competition as a stepping stone toward future success while building lasting friendships and valuable competitive experience.
The championship underscored NU’s role as a leading venue for international sports and youth development initiatives.
