University of Colombo Hosts Sichuan Education Delegation to Strengthen Academic Collaboration

The University of Colombo welcomed an education delegation from Sichuan Province, People’s Republic of China, on 9 June 2026, marking an important step toward strengthening academic and research collaboration between the two regions.

The delegation, led by Ms Cai Guangjie, Deputy Director-General of the Education Department of Sichuan Province, included senior academic and administrative representatives from several leading institutions, including Sichuan University of Science & Engineering, Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Southwest Medical University, Neijiang Normal University, Chengdu University of Technology, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Sichuan Agricultural University, and China West Normal University.

The visit commenced with welcome remarks by Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, who highlighted the importance of international partnerships in advancing higher education. Representatives from the Sichuan institutions then presented overviews of their universities, showcasing their academic strengths and research priorities.

Discussions focused on knowledge exchange, innovation, and opportunities for future collaboration in teaching, research, and institutional development. Senior officials, including Professor Kanchana Abeysekara, Dean of the Faculty of Technology, and Dr Iroja Caldera, Director of the International Office, actively participated in the dialogue.

Both sides expressed a shared commitment to building a long-term partnership aimed at enhancing academic cooperation and fostering greater global engagement between Sri Lanka and China.
