HKUST Promotes “Study in Hong Kong” Brand and Strengthens International Education Hub Development

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), in collaboration with seven other universities supported by the University Grants Committee (UGC), co-hosted the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2026 Conference and Exhibition from February 23 to 27. The event was part of a broader initiative to promote the “Study in Hong Kong” brand and enhance the region’s position as a global education hub.

Participation in the APAIE 2026 Presidents’ Dialogue

During the conference, Professor Nancy Ip, President of HKUST, participated in the APAIE 2026 Presidents’ Dialogue, which convened over 70 leaders from universities around the world. The dialogue focused on the theme “Partnerships for the Global Good: Navigating Challenges, Excelling Innovation, and Building Trust.” Key discussions highlighted the significant role of higher education in addressing global challenges, emphasizing the need for collaborative partnerships, particularly in areas such as climate resilience and governance in artificial intelligence.

Study in Hong Kong Week Activities

As part of “Study in Hong Kong” week, HKUST hosted more than 100 senior leaders from various educational institutions, including Professor Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. The week featured the signing of two collaboration agreements focused on enhancing student exchanges and fostering joint research initiatives, alongside commitments to sustainable development and innovation.

Engagement with International Leaders

HKUST organized a variety of activities that attracted over 400 international education leaders and partners. A notable event was the Campus Day held on February 27, which provided opportunities for delegates from international institutions to explore HKUST’s initiatives related to innovation and sustainability.

Strategic Global Engagement

In recent years, HKUST has increased its engagement with the global education community through strategic partnerships and outreach efforts, particularly targeting Europe, ASEAN, and regions associated with the Belt and Road Initiative. The university’s recruitment strategies have aimed at attracting high-caliber students and have been supported by government scholarships. Current statistics indicate that approximately 25% of HKUST’s international student population originates from ASEAN countries.

Academic Excellence and Global Interest

HKUST has consistently been recognized as one of the world’s leading higher education institutions, particularly noted for its substantial international student enrolment at the undergraduate level. The university received applications from 110 countries for the 2026/27 admission cycle, indicating a growing global interest.
