Values at the Core of University Development: Balancing Ethics with Academic Excellence

On February 2, 2026, during the New Year address titled “Advancing Knowledge, Upholding Values,” Prof. Dr. Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), emphasized the importance of prioritizing values and ethical character in education. He articulated that universities should aim to develop academics and students who strike a balance between knowledge and character, rather than focusing exclusively on academic achievements.
Importance of Values in Education
Prof. Ahmad highlighted that values serve as the cornerstone of a harmonious campus environment, rooted in universal human principles. He pointed out that the university’s goal should extend beyond producing knowledgeable individuals; it should also encompass the nurturing of individuals who demonstrate intellectual excellence alongside strong ethical principles, respect for others, and constructive engagement within the academic community.
Key Values and Campus Environment
Key values discussed included mutual respect, openness to diverse perspectives, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with all members of the campus community. This approach reflects UUM’s aspiration to be a leading institution that fosters integrity and high moral standards.
Integration of Higher Education Initiatives
Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor referenced directives from the Minister of Higher Education and the Chief Secretary to the Government as outlined in the Malaysian Higher Education Plan (RPTM) for 2026-2035. These directives are to be integrated into UUM’s strategic planning, prioritizing eight national higher education initiatives.
Building a Supportive Environment for Students
These initiatives encompass ensuring university placements for exceptional students, providing free education for disabled individuals, enhancing student welfare, and creating more conducive learning environments. In light of this, Prof. Ahmad encouraged department heads to pay closer attention to the needs of students with disabilities, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving accessibility and inclusivity.
Commitment to Disabled Students and Staff
UUM is also looking to establish a dedicated department to address the welfare of disabled students and staff. Discussions regarding expanded student accommodation facilities in collaboration with government-linked companies are ongoing.
Historical Awareness and National Identity
Furthermore, Prof. Ahmad highlighted the significance of general studies subjects, particularly history, in shaping national identity and future direction. Academics at UUM were encouraged to participate actively in public discourse, especially regarding the importance of historical awareness for the younger generation.
Empowering Students in University Governance
In alignment with the Ministry of Higher Education’s objectives, Prof. Ahmad stressed the role of academia in nation-building and the necessity of empowering students to engage meaningfully in university decision-making processes. He advocated for providing students with opportunities to participate in committees and leadership platforms, promoting the development of resilient, independent, and civic-minded graduates.
Appointment of Key Office Bearers
During the address, Prof. Ahmad also presented letters of appointment to key office bearers within the university for 2026, with the ceremony attended by various university leaders.
