Viscan Film has made a remarkable impact by winning a national award for its dedication to child-friendly documentary filmmaking.
Visayas State University Student Film Achieves National Recognition
An independent student-led group at Visayas State University, known as the Silakbo–Baybay Film organization, has been awarded the Most Child-Friendly Documentary in the Young Adult Division for their film “Katutubong Pangarap.” This accolade was presented at the DokyuBata 2025 National Awarding Ceremony, which took place on November 28, 2025, at the Heritage Hotel in Manila.

DokyuBata is an annual competition designed to highlight child-oriented storytelling through documentaries produced by filmmakers of various age groups. The theme for this year’s competition was “Kilometer 0: Mga Lokal na Kuwento para sa Pandaigdigang Adhikain at Pagbabago.”
Film Synopsis
Directed by Chubi Soliva, “Katutubong Pangarap” explores the intertwined ambitions of a young Mamanwa woman from Pinamudlan, San Francisco, Southern Leyte, alongside a child from her community, with both envisioning different futures for themselves and their families. The documentary was recognized as one of the Top 10 finalists in its division, emphasizing significant narratives created by youth that advocate for children’s rights.
Director’s Remarks
In remarks regarding the film, Soliva stated that the recognition reflects the collective efforts of the team to present a narrative rooted in cultural resilience and hope for future generations. The documentary aims to showcase the lived experiences of Mamanwa children while advocating for their rights to dignity, education, and self-determination.

Additionally, the film addresses broader societal issues, particularly the struggle for legitimate land rights, and emphasizes education as a crucial tool for progress and cultural preservation.

SILAKBO’s award adds to the organization’s list of accomplishments for 2025, following success at the PelikulAgraryo Eastern Visayas Regional Short Film Festival, where two other student-produced films also garnered recognition.
