PolyU Hosts International Low-Altitude Economy Summit to Foster Global Collaboration and Innovation

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) recently hosted the International Low-Altitude Economy Summit, co-organized with the HKSAR Government’s Working Group on Developing Low-Altitude Economy and the Greater Bay Area Low Altitude Economy Alliance. The event attracted over 1,200 participants, including government officials, industry leaders, scholars, and experts, who convened to discuss key aspects of low-altitude economy development, such as airspace management, innovative technologies, industry models, and urban applications.

Opening Ceremony Details

The opening ceremony was held at the Jockey Club Auditorium on the PolyU campus and featured notable attendees, including Mr. Michael Wong Wai-lun, Deputy Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government; Dr. Lam Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; The Hon. Elizabeth Quat, Legislative Council Member; and Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU.

Keynote Address by Mr. Wong

In his opening address, Mr. Wong highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts across sectors to advance Hong Kong’s low-altitude economy. He reported that the government is undertaking 38 Regulatory Sandbox pilot projects designed to facilitate the development of the low-altitude economy, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in this emerging industry.

PolyU’s Engagement in Low-Altitude Economy

Dr. Lam indicated that PolyU is actively engaging with government and industry partners to promote the low-altitude economy, which is perceived as a significant contributor to new productive forces at the national level. He mentioned that recommendations provided to the HKSAR Government emphasize infrastructure development and regional collaboration, both of which are essential for enhancing Hong Kong’s status as a key hub for low-altitude applications.

The Hon. Elizabeth Quat remarked on the transformative potential of the low-altitude economy across various sectors, noting its capacity to create job opportunities and enhance public efficiency. She underscored the importance of collaborative efforts from multiple stakeholders to ensure safe development within this sector and acknowledged the role of the Greater Bay Area Low Altitude Economy Alliance in fostering innovation and strengthening collaboration among regional cities.

Keynote Speeches and Discussions

The summit included keynote speeches and discussions on topics such as intelligent network development for flight services by Dr. Bi Qi, Chief Scientist of China Telecom, alongside sessions addressing policies, regulatory frameworks, and technological advancements in low-altitude airspace management.

PolyU’s Commitment to Innovation

PolyU emphasizes its commitment to supporting Hong Kong’s low-altitude economy through various initiatives focused on innovation, knowledge transfer, policy development, and talent cultivation. The establishment of the Research Centre for Low Altitude Economy signifies the university’s dedication to interdisciplinary research and collaboration within this evolving field.
