“Special Lecture by Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad at Kyushu University: Insights on Peace and Conflict Resolution”

Kyushu University hosted a special lecture by Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, on August 6, 2025, at the Shiiki Concert Hall on the university’s Ito Campus. This event coincided with the conferment of an honorary doctorate to Dr. Mahathir, who celebrated his centennial year.

Lecture Theme

The lecture was centered on the theme “Toward a Future Without Conflict.” Dr. Mahathir, noted for his leadership during a significant economic growth period in Malaysia and his influential role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), shared his perspectives on peace. His connection with Kyushu University included a previous visit in 2013 to its hydrogen-related facilities, which contributed to the awarding of the honorary doctorate.

Attendance and Engagement

Approximately 450 individuals attended the lecture, including students, faculty members, and members of the public. Dr. Mahathir emphasized the role of younger generations in promoting peace and engaged in a dialogue session that encouraged participation and discussion among attendees.

Panel Discussion

In advance of Dr. Mahathir’s lecture, a panel discussion was conducted featuring Kyushu University students alongside high school students. This panel, which included undergraduate and graduate students from the university, a visiting professor, and a student from the Japan Future Leaders School, focused on building friendship and cultural understanding, highlighting the significance of early education in these efforts.

Tour of Research Center

Additionally, Dr. Mahathir toured the International Research Center for Hydrogen Energy, where he engaged with Professor Kazunari Sasaki, Vice President for Research Promotion. This tour included discussions with Malaysian students and an opportunity to test a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

Honorary Doctorate Conferral

Following the lecture and ensuing discussions, Kyushu University formally conferred the honorary doctorate upon Dr. Mahathir. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Mahathir acknowledged the university’s relationship with Malaysia and expressed optimism regarding hydrogen research and collaborative projects. He also donated books to the university as a gesture of goodwill.
