On July 26, 2025, Zhang Liqun, president of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, took part in the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held in Shanghai.

Participation in the AI Future Forum

During the “AI Future Forum: Superintelligence, Boundless Co-Creation,” Zhang contributed to discussions surrounding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on university education and the innovation ecosystem in scientific research. He highlighted the need for reforms in higher education, particularly in relation to advancements in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Innovations at Xi’an Jiaotong University

Zhang mentioned that XJTU has initiated China’s first undergraduate program dedicated to AI and has established a national key laboratory alongside a national AI industry-education innovation platform. The university has also developed a “1+1+X” curriculum system that includes 87 specialized courses and has trained 12 large vertical models tailored for specific sectors, demonstrating XJTU’s commitment to AI-enhanced education.

Future Goals and Initiatives

In 2025, the university aims to develop a new talent cultivation system, promote collaborative technological innovation, and explore innovative governance frameworks that integrate industry and academia. Additionally, XJTU recently met goals set forth in the Ministry of Education’s “101 Plan” for AI by releasing 12 core textbooks designed to align patriotism with innovation.

International Collaboration in AI Education

Zhang also expressed interest in fostering international collaboration to influence AI-driven higher education and contribute to a unified global future.

The WAIC has been conducted annually since 2018, featuring various components such as conferences, exhibitions, awards, interactive sessions, and innovation incubation activities. The conference gathers leading scientists, entrepreneurs, government officials, scholars, and investors, providing a venue for sharing insights and fostering new global opportunities in technology stemming from China’s advancements.
