Curtin University Malaysia recently hosted its inaugural Journalism Summer Camp 2025, marking a significant step in nurturing the next generation of journalists and media creators.
Curtin University Hosts Inaugural Journalism Summer Camp 2025
The first Journalism Summer Camp 2025 at Curtin University Malaysia successfully concluded, offering skill development to 23 participants aspiring to enter the fields of journalism and media creation. Over a five-day period, the camp aimed to enhance participants’ abilities and confidence.
Collaboration and Structure
Organized collaboratively by Alpha Skills Academy and Curtin University Malaysia, the camp utilized the university’s modern facilities to create a dynamic environment for learning. Participants included university students as well as children from PACTS Schools, an NGO focused on educational opportunities for underprivileged youth.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum was structured to provide practical insight into journalism and media production. Notable mentors, including radio personality JJ Fernandez, PR strategist Zarina Zainal, and entertainment host Azura Zainal, guided the participants throughout the program.
Workshop Highlights
Workshops centered on essential skills such as communication, news writing, interviewing techniques, and modern digital media formats, including podcasting and video production. Participants engaged in various hands-on activities, like simulated press conferences and on-camera interviews, to develop their storytelling skills.
Cultural Engagement
A notable feature of the camp was a Japanese dance workshop led by Yuriko Yamamoto from the Japan Foundation. This session fostered cultural diversity and engaged over 50 additional participants from Curtin Malaysia.
Showcase Event
The camp concluded with a video showcase held at The Auditorium, where participants presented four original productions: “Jack and Jill,” “The Tonight Show with Joann,” “Who Needs Rehearsals Anyway,” and “The World Inside of Me.” The presentations demonstrated a high level of creativity and received positive feedback from trainers.

Mentor JJ Fernandez commented on the positive impact of the camp, indicating it inspired enthusiasm among the young participants. Onny Maathai, chair of the organizing committee and Co-Founder of PACTS Schools, expressed gratitude to Curtin Malaysia for its support, suggesting a desire for future collaborations.
