NUSSU RAG & Flag Day 2025: Celebrating Community Upliftment Through Creativity and Tradition

On August 8, 2025, the University Town Green at the National University of Singapore (NUS) served as a center of activity as students commemorated the NUS Students’ Union (NUSSU) RAG & Flag Day 2025. This event is noted for being one of the longest-standing student-led traditions at NUS, originating in 1958. This year, it featured the theme “Connecting Beyond Horizons,” recognizing both the university’s 120th anniversary and Singapore’s 60th birthday.
Fundraising Initiatives
Leading up to the main event, two Flag Days were held, during which more than 1,500 NUS students gathered donations from across Singapore. The initiative successfully raised close to S$260,000 to benefit 16 Social Service Agencies associated with Community Chest. Donations collected are eligible for a government matching contribution of S$1.50 for every dollar received. Over the past 16 years, the total funds raised have approached S$4.9 million, reflecting the influence of student-led philanthropic activities at NUS.
Community Engagement and Reflections
First-year student Sivakumar Nandhana commented on the importance of Flag Day as a moment for community reflection and engagement, expressing that it provides a chance to consider the needs of others. Li Jie, a student from the Faculty of Dentistry, noted the positive community response and the generosity shown in donations during the event.
Showcase of Performances
The main showcase featured nearly 2,000 students presenting 14 performances, all created by the student body. The performances incorporated handmade costumes, mobile floats, and props, predominantly made from recycled materials, in alignment with a zero-waste challenge that aimed to promote sustainability.
Guests of Honor
The event welcomed Mr. Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Health and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies, as the Guest-of-Honor, alongside other notable attendees, including NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye and NUSSU President Mr. Sean Pang.
Recognition of Contributions
Professor Tan acknowledged the creative efforts of the students, highlighting the importance of upholding a legacy of social contribution and inspiring change through performance art and storytelling.
Flag Carnival and Logistics
In addition to the performances, a Flag Carnival added to the festive atmosphere with games, food, and handicraft booths run by student groups. Mr. Sean Pang pointed out the enhancements made to event logistics through digital solutions, such as custom PayNow QR codes, to support donations and recycling initiatives.
Awards and Sustainability Efforts
The event also presented various awards for notable contributions in performance and sustainability. The Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine was recognized as the overall RAG & Flag winner, while the Pharmaceutical Society received the Zero Waste Best Effort Award. Other awards were distributed to multiple faculties and groups for their commitment to sustainability during the event.
Conclusion
The NUSSU RAG & Flag Day 2025 illustrated a collective endeavor to uplift communities, underscoring the university’s commitment to social responsibility and the value of student participation in community initiatives.
