Establishment Ceremony for TU-IITB Joint Institute of Excellence at Tohoku University

Tohoku University recently inaugurated the TU-IITB Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) on April 15, 2025. The establishment of this institute is intended to enhance industry-academia co-creation, emphasizing research and educational excellence.

Ceremony Highlights

The ceremony featured notable attendees from both institutions, including President Teiji Tominaga, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, and Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi, as well as IITB representatives Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, and Director Shireesh B. Kedare, among others.

His Excellency Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador of India to Japan, attended alongside representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Education and various educational and industrial organizations. The event saw participation from over 50 individuals.

Joint Statement and Objectives

A joint statement outlining the future objectives of the JIE was signed by President Tominaga and Director Kedare during the ceremony. The statement highlights three primary focus areas: education, research, and industry-academia collaboration.

Vision for the JIE

In his opening remarks, President Tominaga shared the vision for the JIE, aiming to cultivate talented individuals equipped for global engagement and to advance research in critical areas such as disaster science, robotics, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum technology. He noted the partnership’s potential to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, fostering mutual development within education and research.

Historical Connections

Vice President Yamaguchi discussed the historical connections between Tohoku University and IITB, emphasizing their shared vision for the JIE’s future. Professor Daisuke Komori provided insights into ongoing research initiatives, including the establishment of a double degree program, while Professor P. Sesh from IITB discussed forthcoming multidisciplinary projects within the JIE framework.

Student Presentations

The event concluded with presentations from Tohoku University students who participated in the 2025 Global Immersion Program at IITB, sharing their experiences and the benefits of intercultural cooperation.

Future Initiatives

The initiatives planned under the JIE are expected to address global challenges and promote sustainable economic development in both Japan and India.
