Sino-Russian Joint Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology: A New Era of Educational Cooperation

On June 7th, the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) celebrated its 100th anniversary with a foundation-laying ceremony for the Sino-Russian Joint Campus. This event is seen as a significant step forward in educational collaboration between China and Russia. Among the attendees were Wang Wentao, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Heilongjiang Provincial Committee and Governor of Heilongjiang Province, and Vladimir Oshepkov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Harbin, alongside various officials and representatives from the academic community.
Congratulations from Academic Leaders
Nikolay Kropachev, rector of St. Petersburg State University, conveyed his congratulations via video link, acknowledging HIT’s progress into one of China’s leading universities in its century-long history. The formation of the joint campus is intended to bolster the preparation of high-level professionals from both institutions and to support the educational goals set forth by leaders from both nations.
Symbolic Gesture
To mark the occasion, Kropachev planted a plum tree, which symbolized the partnership between the universities and the expansion of educational opportunities in China. He cited a Chinese proverb that recognizes the importance of teachers and educational institutions in cultivating successful students globally, mentioning that the new joint campus is anticipated to contribute to such success.
Strategic Importance of Collaboration
HIT President Zhou Yu highlighted the long-standing ties between China and Russia, emphasizing the strategic importance of this collaboration in addressing innovation and research challenges. He indicated that the joint campus would act as a foundation for high-level educational initiatives that are crucial for the advancement of both countries.
Event Oversight and Participation
The event was overseen by Xiong Sihao, Chairman of the University Council, who, along with other leaders, took part in the groundwork for the Sino-Russian Joint Campus.
Community Engagement
Local government officials and guests from Heilongjiang Province and Harbin Municipality also attended the ceremony, with faculty and students from both universities participating remotely, reflecting a wide-ranging engagement with the occasion.
