Dr. Talal Shahwan Participates in London Conference on Palestinian Higher Education and International Academic Solidarity

Birzeit University President Dr. Talal Shahwan took part in the annual “Friends of Palestinian Universities” Conference held in London under the theme “Standing with Palestinian Higher Education: International Solidarity and Academic Partnership.” The event brought together academics, diplomats, and representatives from Palestinian, Arab, and British institutions, alongside international higher education stakeholders.
In his address, Dr. Shahwan outlined key challenges facing Palestinian higher education, including constraints on knowledge production, the role of education as a source of hope, and the importance of international solidarity and academic partnerships. He emphasized that Palestinian universities continue to fulfil their academic and research missions despite ongoing political and structural challenges.
He highlighted the severe impact of the current situation in Gaza on educational institutions and infrastructure, noting the broader humanitarian and social consequences. At the same time, he underscored that education in Palestine remains a symbol of resilience, dignity, and identity-building.
Dr. Shahwan presented Birzeit University’s “Restoring Hope” initiative, which supports students and researchers in Gaza through academic cooperation, research collaboration, and advocacy. He called for expanded international partnerships, scholarships, and research exchange programs to strengthen the sustainability of Palestinian higher education.
On the sidelines of the conference, Dr. Shahwan also attended a reception hosted by the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Dr. Husam Zomlot, where participants discussed the state and future of Palestinian universities and opportunities for enhanced global cooperation.
