AUB President Reflects on Resilience, Graduation, and the Meaning of “Angel from Montgomery”

As the spring semester came to a close, the President of the American University of Beirut (AUB) reflected on a turbulent period marked by the aftermath of the April 8, 2026 bombardment of Beirut. Immediately following the attack, university leadership coordinated with medical teams at AUB Medical Center to ensure emergency readiness, manage incoming casualties, and apply lessons from previous crises to safeguard patient care and staff response.

On campus, students were instructed to shelter in place while non-essential university operations were suspended, with priority given to safety and continuity of critical medical services. Despite ongoing uncertainty, preparations for the Class of 2026 graduation continued, guided by a determination to honour a cohort shaped by years of hardship and resilience.

The university gradually resumed academic activity following a ceasefire, extending the semester and adjusting academic schedules. Planning for commencement involved extensive coordination with faculty, trustees, and student representatives, ensuring both safety and a meaningful celebration.

In his reflections, the President drew inspiration from John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” and “All the Best,” using them as metaphors for endurance, loss, and grace. The graduating class was praised for its perseverance, with commencement speakers highlighting themes of hope, responsibility, and community.

Despite challenges, the graduation ceremony ultimately stood as a powerful and uplifting milestone for the university community.
