New Initiatives Advance Cultural and Academic Relations Between Iran and Sri Lanka

The University of Colombo welcomed Mr. Ali Kebriaei Zadeh, Cultural Counsellor of the Iran Cultural Centre, during an official visit aimed at strengthening cultural and academic relations between Iran and Sri Lanka. The meeting was held with Vice-Chancellor Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake at College House on 5 May 2026.

The discussion focused on expanding future collaboration in areas including higher education, academic research, cultural exchange, and institutional partnerships. Both parties highlighted the importance of fostering stronger international connections to support knowledge-sharing, intercultural understanding, and collaborative learning opportunities between the two countries.

The visit reflects the University of Colombo’s continued commitment to international engagement and the development of strategic global partnerships that enhance academic excellence and cross-cultural cooperation. Strengthening ties with institutions and cultural organisations from different regions also creates opportunities for joint programmes, research initiatives, student exchanges, and collaborative academic activities.

Representatives from both sides expressed optimism about future initiatives that could deepen educational and cultural cooperation between Iran and Sri Lanka. The meeting further highlighted the role of universities as important platforms for diplomacy, dialogue, and international understanding through education and research.
