First Africa Women’s Cancer Initiative Launched by WHO and AKU

WHO and Aga Khan University Launch First Africa Women’s Cancer Initiative to Strengthen Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention, Diagnosis, and Care Systems Across Low- and Middle-Income Countries
The World Health Organization and the Aga Khan University Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, East Africa, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding to establish the first collaborative initiative in Africa focused on women’s cancers, particularly breast and cervical cancer. The initiative aims to strengthen evidence generation, capacity building, and implementation research to bridge gaps between global health standards and real-world healthcare delivery in low- and middle-income countries. With cancer rates rising sharply across Africa, the programme seeks to improve prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment systems while addressing late-stage presentation and access barriers. The collaboration also supports WHO’s global health priorities and aims to develop scalable, integrated care models, strengthen health workforce capacity, and improve patient outcomes through research-driven solutions tailored to regional needs.
