Tsinghua University Unveils New Center for Life Sciences and Artificial Intelligence
Tsinghua University has established the Center for Life Sciences and Artificial Intelligence within its School of Life Sciences. The inauguration, which was overseen by Wang Hongwei, the university’s vice president, focused on the significance of combining life sciences with artificial intelligence.
Strategic Initiative for Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Wang emphasized that the creation of the center is a strategic initiative designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance the university’s scientific and technological independence. He presented a dual-focused strategy for the center, indicating that advancements in artificial intelligence could benefit the life sciences, and vice versa. Wang expressed confidence that the center will address critical challenges in the sector and make meaningful contributions to the global scientific community.
Leadership and Appointments
At the ceremony, Shi Songhai, Dean of the School of Life Sciences and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, officially announced the new center. He appointed Zhang Qiangfeng as the Director and Jia Xiaoxuan as the Deputy Director, providing them with their official letters of appointment.
Academic Advisory Committee
Xie Wei, the vice dean of the School, introduced the center’s Academic Advisory Committee. This committee will be chaired by Zhang Zemin, the president of Chongqing Medical University, and includes prominent experts such as Chen Runsheng from the CAS Institute of Biophysics, Cai Xiujun from Zhejiang University, and Huang Tiejun from the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, along with other esteemed faculty members from Tsinghua University.
Inauguration Ceremony Highlights
The inauguration ceremony also featured keynote presentations from experts including Chen Runsheng, Xu Jinbo, Zhang Chenyu, and Zhang Xuegong. The event was co-chaired by Xie Wei and Zhang Qiangfeng and was attended by representatives from various universities, research institutions, and enterprises.
