Empowering the Disability Community: Engineering Innovations by Students

Students from Zhejiang University (ZJUI) have developed engineering designs to support the disability community, aligning with the theme of the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which promotes disability-inclusive societies. Utilizing advanced engineering techniques and human-centered design, these innovations aim to address various real-world challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

Robotic Arm for Wheelchair Users

One significant project is a robotic arm integrated into a wheelchair, which aids users in reaching objects that are difficult to access. This system includes a Mixed Reality (MR) interface that enhances the user’s field of vision and facilitates interaction with the environment, thereby promoting greater autonomy in daily activities.

Smart Assistive Walking Stick

Another important development is a smart assistive walking stick designed for visually impaired individuals. This device employs multi-sensor fusion technology, incorporating lidar, GPS positioning, and computer vision, to ensure reliable navigation and effective obstacle avoidance. It particularly addresses the difficulties encountered at traffic intersections, enhancing the safety and independence of visually impaired travelers.

Robotic Arm System for Limited Mobility

Additionally, a robotic arm system has been created for individuals with limited mobility, designed to assist with daily tasks by accurately interpreting human commands and adapting to environmental changes. This innovation supports users in achieving a higher level of independent living.

Non-Contact Home Health Monitoring System

Moreover, a non-contact home health monitoring system utilizing WiFi signals has been developed to cater to the needs of elderly individuals living alone. This system allows for health condition monitoring without requiring users to wear devices, which significantly improves accessibility.

Smart Glove for Human-Computer Interaction

Lastly, a smart glove intended for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) captures hand gestures in real time, facilitating device control. This technology aims to create a more intuitive and efficient control experience, particularly benefiting individuals with disabilities by providing an alternative to traditional input methods.

These projects reflect ZJUI’s commitment to leveraging engineering and design innovations to enhance the inclusion and dignity of people with disabilities, contributing to a more accessible and supportive environment.
