HKU Celebrates 76th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China with National Day Flag-Raising Ceremony

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a flag-raising ceremony on October 1, 2025, to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. The event took place at the Grand Hall of the Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre on the Centennial Campus.

Ceremony Attendees

The ceremony included several attendees, such as Council Chairman Peter Wong, President and Vice-Chancellor Xiang Zhang, Council and Senate members, Faculty Deans, staff, students, and invited guests. Following the flag-raising, the HKU Yue Rong Dance Troupe performed a contemporary dance titled “My Mother River,” which artistically represented the significance of the Yellow River in Chinese civilization. The performance emphasized themes of perseverance, ingenuity, and a connection to the motherland through movement.

HKU’s 115th Anniversary

This year’s ceremony also marked HKU’s 115th anniversary, allowing for reflection on the university’s historical contributions to academia and its role in the development of Hong Kong and the nation. Since its establishment in 1911, HKU has played a significant role in nurturing talent and advancing research across various fields, thereby contributing to national progress in science and technology. The flag-raising ceremony reinforced HKU’s commitment to academic excellence while supporting national development, with a focus on empowering students and scholars to promote high-quality growth and cultural exchange.
