HKU Hosts the 25th Asian Quantum Information Science Conference: A Gathering of Over 400 Experts in Quantum Science

The 25th Asian Quantum Information Science Conference (AQIS’25) took place at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and concluded on August 8, 2025. This event represented a significant milestone as it was the first instance of the conference being hosted in Hong Kong, drawing over 400 participants, including scientists, scholars, and students from multiple countries.

Co-Organization and Purpose

The conference was co-organized by the Quantum Information and Computation Initiative (QICI) at HKU’s School of Computing and Data Science (CDS), the Hong Kong Institute of Quantum Science & Technology (HKIQST), and the Hong Kong Branch of the Quantum Science Centre for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

Opening Remarks

During the opening remarks, Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, highlighted the increasing international interest in quantum research from regions including Europe, the United States, and China. He pointed out HKU’s significant role in fostering connections between Eastern and Western academic communities, noting the rising importance of Asia in quantum science.

Conference Highlights

As Asia’s leading forum for research in quantum information, AQIS’25 emphasized advancements in quantum physics, computer science, mathematics, and technology throughout its five-day agenda. The program included invited presentations, poster sessions, and discussions on several topics, including:

  • Quantum computation, simulation, algorithms, and complexity
  • Quantum information theory
  • Strategies for minimizing decoherence
  • Quantum cryptography and communication
  • Quantum metrology and experimental platforms
  • Quantum circuits, architecture, and programming

Participants and Contributions

Participants included researchers from esteemed institutions such as the University of Oxford, Weizmann Institute of Science, University of Cambridge, University of Tokyo, University of Waterloo, National University of Singapore, and the University of Science and Technology of China, as well as representatives from major organizations like JPMorgan Chase.

Acknowledgments

HKU acknowledged the contributions of speakers, delegates, and sponsors to the success of AQIS’25 and expressed hope for future collaborations in quantum science.
