Exploring Biomedical Science and Forensics: IMU’s Engaging Showcase at King Henry School’s Science Week

On February 18, 2025, King Henry VIII Senior School organized a Science Week event that featured presentations on biomedical science presented by a team from International Medical University (IMU). The initiative, led by Dr. Anil and Associate Professor Dr. Lim Chooi Ling, aimed to educate students on the significant role of biomedical scientists in disease diagnosis.
Learning About Diagnostic Analysis
Participants learned about the diagnostic analysis of human urine samples, which can indicate various health conditions such as kidney and liver issues, diabetes, and cancer markers. The presentations highlighted how changes in the appearance and odor of urine can be associated with potential health problems. An interactive session conducted by Dr. Anil allowed students to observe laboratory techniques used in analyzing these samples.
Importance of Early Detection
The event emphasized the importance of early detection and the need for consulting healthcare professionals when abnormalities in urine are noticed. Student feedback reflected surprise at the amount of diagnostic information that could be obtained from such a common sample.
Hands-On Medical Biotechnology Session
In addition to biomedical science, a hands-on Medical Biotechnology session was conducted by Ts Dr. Tan Boon Hooi and Dr. Lim Wui Zhuan. This segment provided students with opportunities to engage in forensic simulations, including presumptive blood tests and fingerprint collection, which showcased the practical applications of scientific principles in forensic settings.
Conclusion: Inspiring Future Scientists
The successful Science Week event at King Henry VIII Senior School underscored the essential contributions of biomedical scientists in healthcare, often operating behind the scenes to ensure accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. These educational experiences aimed to inspire students to consider future science careers by illustrating the importance of biomedical science in daily healthcare practices. Dr. Lim noted the significance of such initiatives in fostering interest in the scientific field and promoting advancements in healthcare.
