Stemming brain drain: PM calls for more world-class universities to set up campuses in Cambodia

In a significant move to bolster Cambodia’s educational landscape and retain homegrown talent, Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on more major international universities to set up campuses in the Kingdom in the bid to stem a brain drain.

At present many Cambodian students who go for studies abroad tend to find jobs in those countries and settle there.

Speaking at the inauguration of De Montfort University Cambodia in Phnom Penh yesterday, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of such institutions in fostering education and job creation within the country.

The establishment of De Montfort University, a prestigious institution based in the United Kingdom, marks a notable development in Cambodia’s higher education sector. According to Mr Hun Manet, the university’s decision to set up a branch in Cambodia reflects a recognition of the country’s educational value and the quality of its students, who are now poised to compete on an international stage.

“The presence of this prestigious international university is a testament to the growing quality of education in Cambodia and the potential of our students,” the Premier added. “This is not just an acknowledgement of our educational standards but also of Cambodia’s political stability, economic growth, and the increasing strength of our market.”
