Higher Education Ministry Collaborates With UTM To Set Up Malaysia’s First AI Faculty

The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) is developing Malaysia's first Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

Minister Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the Higher Education Committee approved the Bachelor’s Degree in AI programme in January, as part of the country’s efforts to meet current digital needs.

“The AI curriculum has been identified to fulfil industrial needs. [Its development] involves experts in the AI field and is in line with the National AI Roadmap 2021-2025 initiated by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry,” he said, as quoted by Bernama.

He added that classes for the programme’s first cohort will begin in October this year.

Zambry added that his ministry is working towards achieving the country’s aim to grow skilled talents and future-proof graduates

“The ministry has also developed a High Value and High Technology Programme Development Framework aimed at producing graduates who are able to face the ever-changing and competitive job landscape in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0,” he said at the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, 13 March.

According to the New Straits Times, the plan to set up an AI faculty in Malaysia was announced during the tabling of the 2024 Budget last year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said its development would involve an initial allocation of RM20 million.
