KazNU Becomes First Central Asian University to Receive Prestigious Esri GIS Award
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) has become the first university in Central Asia to receive the prestigious Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award from Esri, a global leader in geographic information systems (GIS).
The award recognizes KazNU’s innovative use of mapping and spatial analytics technologies, as well as its leadership in research, education and applied geospatial innovation. The university has developed an advanced geospatial ecosystem that integrates GIS, remote sensing and high-performance computing, supported by enterprise-level platforms including ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online.
These technologies are enabling interdisciplinary research in areas such as climate risk assessment, land degradation, natural hazard modelling and environmental monitoring. KazNU is also applying geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) to support large-scale spatial analysis and address national and regional challenges.
Through partnerships with Esri and Data+ International, the university has strengthened its capacity for geospatial education, professional training and technology development. The initiative is helping establish KazNU as an important regional platform for GIS and GeoAI research.
Omirzhan Taukebayev, CEO of the Engineering and High Technologies Cluster, said the recognition reflects KazNU’s strategic efforts to combine geospatial technologies, artificial intelligence, scientific research and modern computing infrastructure to develop scalable solutions for sustainable development.
Established in 1998, the SAG Award recognizes organizations worldwide that demonstrate outstanding applications of GIS technology to address complex real-world challenges.
