Leading Iranian and Russian universities held a coordination meeting at the University of Tehran on 26 July 2026 to strengthen bilateral academic and research cooperation and prepare for the upcoming Eighth Iran–Russia Universities Summit.
The meeting brought together university representatives, Russia’s Science and Technology Counselor in Iran, and representatives of the Russkiy Mir Foundation. Discussions focused on improving the implementation of existing memoranda of understanding (MoUs), strengthening scientific diplomacy and establishing a joint executive committee to oversee future cooperation.
University of Tehran Vice President for International Affairs Dr. Elham Aminzadeh highlighted opportunities for collaboration in emerging fields and emphasized the importance of moving beyond symbolic agreements toward practical outcomes. Participants identified areas including artificial intelligence, maritime economy, transportation, energy, quantum technologies, cybersecurity and agriculture as potential priorities for joint research.
The meeting also reviewed the history of the Iran–Russia Universities Summit, which began in 2015, and discussed preparations for its eighth edition. Participants proposed stronger mechanisms for monitoring existing agreements and supporting collaborative research.
Among the measures approved were efforts to reduce visa fees for faculty and students, establish a joint financial fund for research projects, expand cooperation with the Russian Academy of Sciences, and create a follow-up committee comprising five universities from each country.
The initiatives aim to transform bilateral academic agreements into sustainable and results-oriented partnerships.
