Nagano University Strengthens Community Learning Through GK Cox Immersion
For two consecutive years, students from Nagano University in Japan have participated in immersive community learning experiences at the GK Del Rosario-Cox (GK Cox) community in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City. Organised through the Office of University Partnerships and Internationalization (UPI) in collaboration with Gawad Kalinga-Ateneo (GKA), the initiative highlights the value of experiential education grounded in meaningful community engagement.
In 2024, 28 students conducted community-based research on grassroots entrepreneurship, focusing on the vital role of sari-sari stores in supporting local livelihoods and strengthening neighbourhood relationships. Guided by community leaders and residents, the students gained first-hand insights into the resilience and resourcefulness of Filipino communities.
Building on the programme’s success, a new cohort of 27 students returned on 9 July 2025 to expand their research to include local entrepreneurs and community residents. Supported by GK Payatas Trese youth volunteers serving as translators and guides, the students explored broader aspects of community life while fostering cross-cultural understanding and meaningful dialogue.
Beyond academic research, the immersions encouraged mutual learning, empathy, and global citizenship. The continuing partnership between Nagano University, UPI, and GKA demonstrates how international collaborations can enrich education by connecting students with communities whose lived experiences offer lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.
