University of Dhaka Hosts Celebration of Pushkin’s 227th Birthday and Russian Language Day

The University of Dhaka organized a commemorative programme to mark the 227th Birth Anniversary of Alexander Pushkin, the celebrated Russian poet and founder of modern Russian literature, alongside Russian Language Day. The event was held on the morning of 14 June 2026 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban premises of the university.

Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Dhaka, attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Ms. Alexandra A. Khelvnoy, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangladesh and Director of the Russian House in Dhaka, participated as the Special Guest.

In his address, Professor Dr. Abdus Salam highlighted Pushkin’s global literary significance and his enduring contribution to themes of human dignity, freedom, and cultural identity. He emphasized that celebrating Pushkin Day also honors the richness of the Russian language, which serves as a bridge for cultural exchange and international understanding. He reaffirmed the University of Dhaka’s commitment to fostering global engagement through language learning and cultural activities.

Ms. Khelvnoy underscored the importance of Russian Language Day as a celebration of linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. She noted that the Russian language opens pathways to higher education, research, and professional opportunities, including scholarships offered by the Russian Government.

The programme was attended by teachers, students, alumni, and representatives of the Russian House, reflecting growing academic and cultural cooperation between Bangladesh and Russia.
