University of Nottingham and Tsinghua Partner to Advance Health Innovation and Technology Research

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and Tsinghua University have formalized a landmark partnership aimed at advancing public health, technological innovation, and academic collaboration across East Africa. The agreement was announced during a courtesy visit to UoN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eng. Ayub N. Gitau and coincided with the launch of the International Workshop on Accessible Medical Imaging Diagnosis 2026.

The partnership focuses on three key areas: joint academic programs, student mobility, and policy-focused research. Both institutions will co-develop educational initiatives in SMART urban planning, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, public health, and constitutional management. A new “1+1” fellowship program will provide students with opportunities to study across both universities, supported by scholarship funding.

In addition, Tsinghua Summer School programs will be jointly hosted in Kenya and China, strengthening international learning experiences. The universities also plan to establish a Policy Center in Nairobi to conduct collaborative research and develop evidence-based policy recommendations for government adoption.

During the workshop, Tsinghua’s Prof. Bin Yang highlighted the importance of expanding access to medical imaging technologies, particularly through AI-driven solutions, portable devices, and digital healthcare tools. The initiative aligns with broader China-Africa cooperation efforts in health and innovation.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate research, strengthen healthcare systems, and empower the next generation of African scientists, engineers, and healthcare professionals.
