Walailak University Develops Petty Patent-Protected Gel for Improved Blepharitis Diagnosis

Researchers from the Walailak University School of Medicine have developed an innovative Demodex staining gel designed to improve the accuracy of diagnosing blepharitis, a common eye condition. The formulation, which uses Chicago Sky Blue dye, has been granted a petty patent (No. 27311) by Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property.

Led by Associate Professor Dr. Auemphon Mordmuang, along with Assistant Professors Dr. Weeratian Tawanwongsri and Dr. Lunla Udomwech, the research addresses key challenges in detecting Demodex mites, a primary cause of blepharitis. Due to their microscopic size, these mites are difficult to identify using conventional methods, often delaying diagnosis and treatment.

The new gel significantly enhances visibility under a microscope, allowing more accurate and efficient detection compared to traditional staining techniques. Researchers report improved diagnostic performance and potential for better patient outcomes.

Walailak University is now seeking industry partners to support further development and commercialisation of the innovation for wider clinical use.
