UCT Law Students Triumph at East Africa Pre-Moot, Eye Global Vis Moot in Vienna

The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Vis Moot team has achieved a historic win at the East Africa Pre-Moot of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Nairobi, competing against 18 teams from across the continent. Represented by Tayla Cooper and Benjamin Reid, and coached by Kerrin Baker, the UCT team showcased outstanding technical expertise and oral advocacy, advancing through the semi-finals against the National University of Lesotho and defeating the University of Zimbabwe in the final. Reid was also recognized as Runner-Up Best Oralist.
This marks UCT’s first East Africa Pre-Moot victory, reflecting the growth and preparation of its Vis Moot teams. The success prepares the students for the global rounds in Vienna at the end of March, where approximately 400 universities will compete. Cooper emphasized the value of months of preparation, teamwork, and skill development, while Baker highlighted the team’s professionalism and ability to forge international connections.
The Vis Moot develops critical legal skills through written memoranda and oral presentations in arbitration, fostering advocacy, analytical thinking, and professional resilience. UCT’s achievement underscores the university’s commitment to experiential legal education and positions its students for global excellence in international commercial arbitration.
