Peking University: A Journey of Cultural Exchange from Uganda to Beijing in 2025

As the semester concludes and the holiday break approaches, students at Peking University (PKU) reflect on the past year while setting their goals for 2026.

Academic and Cultural Exchange at Peking University

Olivia Kugonza, a Ugandan student, has long aspired to visit China. Growing up surrounded by Chinese-built shops, restaurants, and goods, she developed a connection to the country despite never having traveled there. To pursue her interests, Kugonza enrolled in a master’s degree program in Chinese Language and Economy at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) in Germany.

This program provided an exchange opportunity at PKU, which Kugonza accepted enthusiastically. Her exchange began on September 1, 2025. Upon arriving in Beijing, she encountered a vibrant cityscape marked by towering buildings and a blend of natural beauty with modern innovations. However, she quickly realized that her initial familiarity with China masked many deeper cultural aspects.

During her time at PKU, Kugonza appreciated the university’s tranquil campus and diverse food offerings. She immersed herself in academic pursuits and cultural experiences, engaging with the rigorous coursework and enriching environment characteristic of Peking University.

A notable experience during her exchange was participation in the International Culture Festival, where she explored global traditions and shared elements of her own culture. This event contributed to her understanding of cultural diversity. In addition to life on campus, she visited several historical sites in Beijing, including the Great Wall, which she described as an unforgettable experience.

Kugonza’s curiosity also led her beyond Beijing, as she undertook a solo trip to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, two prominent centers of business and innovation in China. Despite lacking connections in these cities, her journey deepened her understanding of the culture through spontaneous interactions with local residents.

Reflecting on her three-month stay at PKU, Kugonza expressed gratitude for her experience. She noted the relationships fostered and the knowledge gained during her exchange. Motivated by the community spirit observed at the university, she plans to continue her studies in the Chinese language and promote cultural exchange between Africa and China.

Kugonza’s journey illustrates how an exchange program can significantly influence personal development and intercultural understanding.
