Perfect Pitch: Mastering the Equity Research Challenge at SEGi University

In a recent equity research challenge organized by Sunway University, a notable achievement was recorded by a team from SEGi University, showcasing the talents of its students in the field of finance and investment.
Equity Research Challenge at SEGi University: An Overview of Achievements
Soh Ye Kai, a recent graduate of the Diploma in Accountancy program, has been recognized as the Second Runner-up in an equity research challenge organized by Sunway University. Currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Accounting and Finance program at SEGi University, Soh and his team competed against 24 teams from various institutions, presenting a stock from the S&P 500 as a BUY recommendation for the next 12 to 18 months.
Challenge Overview
The challenge was launched by the Sunway Business and Investment Society (SBIS), with support from sponsors Crewstone Investment International and Singular Asset Management. Participants were required to perform thorough analyses of industry prospects, financial performance, growth catalysts, and stock valuation models. Soh’s team chose Stryker, a major player in the medical device sector, highlighting its consistent growth, solid fundamentals, and positive future outlook. Their analysis included a review of the company’s background, industry trends, potential growth opportunities, and financial projections.
Preparation and Presentation
The team received the challenge details on September 15 and dedicated two weeks to prepare for their presentation on September 29. During the competition, each team was allotted 10 minutes to deliver their pitch, followed by a five-minute question and answer session with judges.
Recognition and Learning Experience
Soh’s team’s performance earned them third place, receiving commendations for their clarity and well-researched arguments. In reflecting on the competition, Soh acknowledged the pressure of presenting in front of judges and an audience while appreciating the valuable learning experience it offered.
Support from SEGi University
The Faculty of Business, Accountancy and Law (FOBAL) at SEGi University provided crucial support during the team’s preparation. Soh specifically acknowledged the contributions of his lecturers, Mr. Muslim and Ms. Shantiny, for their guidance throughout the competition.
A Valuable Stepping Stone
Although the team did not secure the championship title, Soh views the experience as a valuable stepping stone for future aspirations. He emphasized the insights gained and constructive feedback received from industry experts. With a strong foundation in finance and practical experience in analytical challenges, Soh aims to motivate fellow SEGi students by illustrating how the integration of academic learning, real-world applications, and commitment can lead to significant accomplishments.
