UTB Receives Two Prestigious Awards at BICTA 2025: A Triumph for Innovation and Excellence

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) was recognized with two notable awards at the Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2025 ceremony, held at the Jerudong International School Arts Centre. The awards were presented by the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamry bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha. The Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, attended the ceremony.

Tech4Horizon’s Achievement

Tech4Horizon, a start-up founded by four graduates from UTB’s Mechatronic Engineering program, received the BICTA 2025 Startup Category award for its flagship product, Psychoboard. This kit is notable for being Brunei’s first locally developed Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) educational tool. The start-up’s founding members include Awg Muhd Mahran bin Dr Hj Awg Makarim (CEO), Awg Md Sallehudin bin Awg Md Salishaknizam (CTO), Muhamad Arif Hisyamuddin bin Zaidi (COO), and Mutawali bin Matali (CFO).

About Psychoboard

Psychoboard was created under the UTB Enterprise Office’s Startup Initiative and received guidance from Assistant Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Azlan Bin Ab Aziz. The kit integrates microcontrollers, sensors, an IoT dashboard, and educational modules to support STEM education at various levels. This innovation is fully patented, with UTB as its owner, and will represent Brunei at the APICTA Awards.

Smart Nation Award

Furthermore, UTB was honored with the Smart Nation Award in the Agriculture Category for its project, AlQuatic AquaFeeder, developed by AlQuatic Enterprise. The project team comprised Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr Lim Tiong Hoo from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department, alongside team members Yang Mulia Dk Dr. Nurun Najeebah Az-Zahra binti Pg DSP Hj Mohammad Tashim and Yang Mulia Muhammad Wafiq bin Haji Zariful.

AlQuatic AquaFeeder Explained

The AlQuatic AquaFeeder (AAF) is an automated feeding system designed to improve the efficiency of prawn aquaculture, addressing issues such as high costs and feed waste. The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) and renewable energy solutions, incorporating a camera system and AI algorithms to perform real-time monitoring and accurate sizing of prawns, which enhances sustainability and operational efficiency in aquaculture.
