James Cook University Singapore Celebrates SG60 with Record-Breaking Ang Ku Kueh Mosaic

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, James Cook University Singapore has achieved a new record by creating a 1.9-meter-wide map of Singapore using Ang Ku Kueh, a traditional glutinous rice pastry. This initiative involved contributions from over 500 pastries provided by students, staff, and community members from the Kolam Ayer neighborhood, symbolizing unity and national pride.

Recognition and Purpose

The effort was acknowledged by the Singapore Book of Records and aimed to highlight shared traditions and diversity within the university community. It promoted values such as connection and celebration, aligning with the themes of the national SG60 campaign. Each piece of Ang Ku Kueh carried personal significance, reflecting the collaborative spirit of both the university and the local community.

Milestone in Collaboration

Professor Carole-Anne Upton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Singapore Campus, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving this milestone. She noted that the mosaic not only honors tradition but also enhances connections within the campus community and beyond.

Additional Commemorative Activities

In addition to the Ang Ku Kueh mosaic, James Cook University organized several other activities to commemorate SG60. These included a collaborative batik artwork project, a National Day treasure hunt aimed at immersing participants in local culture, and a student-led tribute video featuring a rendition of the song “Home.”

Commitment to Inclusivity and Diversity

Through these activities, the university reiterated its dedication to inclusivity, cultural respect, and social responsibility, contributing to the diverse fabric of Singaporean society. The SG60 celebrations exemplified the potential for collective joy and unity among various cultures and generations within the nation.
