USM Vice-Chancellor’s Visit to University of Osaka: Strengthening Global Partnerships and Advancing Collaboration

On July 26, 2025, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) took a significant step in international collaboration through a working visit by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed to The University of Osaka. The primary aim of this visit was to strengthen existing partnerships and enhance cooperation in various domains, particularly research and education.
Meeting with The University of Osaka President
The delegation included a courtesy meeting with Professor Dr. Kumanogoh Atsushi, the recently appointed President of The University of Osaka, who began his tenure on April 1, 2025. This meeting coincided with the official rebranding of the institution, transitioning from Osaka University to The University of Osaka.
Long-term Objectives of Collaboration
Professor Abdul Rahman underscored the long-term relevance of the visit, linking it to initiatives he initiated nearly twenty years prior, which have since developed significantly. He noted that the collaboration between USM’s School of Chemical Engineering and the R3 Institute for Newly-Emerging Science Design has expanded into multiple disciplines, resulting in over 100 peer-reviewed international journal publications.
Strategic Partnership in Semiconductor Training
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by key representatives from USM, including the Director of the Research Creativity and Management Office and the Director of the Academic and International Division. Furthermore, he proposed a strategic partnership aimed at training professionals in the semiconductor industry, in alignment with Malaysia’s National Semiconductor Strategy.
Focus Areas for Research Collaboration
Both universities agreed to focus their collaboration on research and exchange programs targeting five significant areas related to semiconductors, including pre- and post-manufacturing processes and semiconductor design. USM also reiterated its commitment to increasing engagement in the Osaka University International Certification Programme, which has benefited more than 20 academic staff and students since its launch in 2022. For the current year, USM plans to send four academic staff members and five students to participate in this program.
Broader Research Collaborations
The discussions during the visit also sought to broaden research collaborations to increase enrollment in the Dual Doctorate Programme. The meeting included several notable academics from The University of Osaka, reflecting the collaborative nature of the institutions involved.
Strategic Move for Global Presence
This visit represents a strategic move for USM to bolster its global presence through expanded educational partnerships and research initiatives in key areas of contemporary science.
