Jesselton University College Strengthens Community Engagement Through Intergenerational Sewing Workshops

KOTA KINABALU, October 2024 – Jesselton University College (JUC) continues to expand its commitment to community engagement and intergenerational learning with a series of sewing workshops held at Kampung Pukak, Kiulu, Tamparuli, Sabah. Conducted on October 3 and October 17, 2024, the workshops provided an opportunity for elderly community members and students to exchange skills and experiences while promoting sustainability and digital inclusion.

The initiative brought together over 80 participants and focused on empowering elderly artisans by equipping them with digital marketing knowledge, enabling them to sell their crafts online while preserving traditional Dusun sewing and craft-making techniques. The workshops also incorporated mental health discussions aimed at fostering awareness among both students and the elderly on emotional well-being and social connection.

The workshops were structured to facilitate skill transfer, cultural exchange, and community building. Elderly artisans, aged between 50 to 75, shared their expertise in traditional sewing techniques, embroidery, and patchwork, while students, aged 19 to 36, actively participated in learning and practicing these skills. Participants also worked with repurposed fabrics to create tote bags, hats, and other handmade products, reinforcing environmental consciousness and zero-waste practices. The hands-on approach allowed students to appreciate the craftsmanship behind sustainable products while gaining practical sewing experience.

Throughout the sessions, participants engaged in various structured activities that fostered interaction and learning. Elderly participants guided students in sewing, patching fabrics, and creating traditional Dusun crafts such as bakul nurod (woven baskets), sirung (cone-shaped baskets), and kinulung (handwoven belts).

The impact of the workshops was evident in the economic and social changes they brought to the community. Following the event, elderly artisans reported a 30 percent increase in sales of their handmade products, demonstrating the effectiveness of the digital marketing exposure provided during the sessions. Students, too, gained valuable practical skills, with 85 percent of participants reporting increased confidence in their sewing and craft-making abilities. The initiative also generated lasting enthusiasm for community engagement, with 90 percent of participants expressing interest in taking part in future programs.
