Ewha Medical Center Celebrates 137th Anniversary of Bogu Women’s Hall: A Legacy of Women’s Health Care
Ewha Womans University Medical Center marked the 137th anniversary of the Bogu Women’s Hall on October 31 with a ceremony held at the Woo Bok-hee Art Hall, which was streamed live on the institution’s official YouTube channel.
Ceremony Highlights
During the ceremony, Yoo Kyung-ha, the head of Ewha Medical Center, underscored the historical significance of the Bogu Women’s Center. He characterized it as a pioneering institution that has provided care for a diverse population while contributing to the education of medical professionals in South Korea. Yoo noted that the establishment of the Bogu Women’s Center represents a critical development in the history of women’s medical care within the country.
Historical Significance of Bogu Women’s Hall
Founded in October 1887 in Jeong-dong, Seoul, the Bogu Women’s Hall is recognized as the first modern women’s hospital and medical education institution in Korea. The term ‘Boguyeogwan,’ allocated by Emperor Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty, translates to ‘place for the widespread salvation of women.’ Over the last 137 years, the core tenets of service and community support initiated by the Bogu Women’s Hall have been upheld by various affiliated institutions, including the Lillian Haris Memorial Hospital and Ewha Dongdaemun Hospital.
Congratulatory Remarks
In her congratulatory remarks, Kim Eun-mi, president of Ewha Womans University, acknowledged the significant accomplishments of Ewha Medical Center, particularly the establishment of specialized facilities such as the Ewha Womans Cancer Hospital and the Ewha University Aortic Vascular Hospital.
Anniversary Celebrations
The anniversary event also included an exhibition titled “Ehwa’s Four Seasons – Ehwa Garden,” curated by honorary professor Hwang Kyu-ho from the education department of Ewha Womans University. The celebrations concluded with a ‘Thanksgiving Night for the 137th Anniversary of Bogu Women’s Hall’ at the university’s convention center.
