UOW Malaysia Becomes First University in South-East Asia to Join Intel’s University Shuttle Programme

UOW Malaysia has been designated as the first university in Southeast Asia to join Intel’s University Shuttle Programme. This recognition follows the establishment of the UOWM-Intel IC Design Centre of Excellence at the Batu Kawan campus on July 1. The formalization of this initiative occurred through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College and Intel Corporation.

MOU Signing Event

The MOU signing event included notable attendees, such as the Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the opening of the Centre. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of the collaboration in preparing students for the evolving technological landscape of the digital economy. He noted that the global semiconductor market is expected to reach approximately US$1 trillion by 2030, underscoring the sector’s growth potential.

Intel’s University Shuttle Programme

Intel’s University Shuttle Programme aims to foster partnerships with educational institutions to provide access to semiconductor chips for research and talent development in the field. As part of the partnership with Intel, UOW Malaysia will receive the advanced i16 Process Design Kit (PDK), enabling faculty and students to work with industry-standard technologies for chip design.

Enhancing Education and Opportunities

This collaboration is anticipated to enhance UOW Malaysia’s offerings, which are already recognized within the top 200 globally for electrical and electronic engineering. Students will benefit from practical experience in integrated circuit (IC) design, with potential for new postgraduate programs in this area.

Training and Research Collaboration

Additionally, the partnership will provide training for academic staff in chip design software and facilitate research collaboration, particularly with local industries. This strategic alliance aligns with the objectives of the Penang state government to establish a robust electronic and digital design ecosystem, thus strengthening the region’s high-tech sector.

Positioning for Innovation

This initiative positions UOW Malaysia within the forefront of semiconductor innovation and education in Southeast Asia.
