Tohoku University Attends Fourth India-Japan Universities Forum for Enhanced Collaboration

Tohoku University participated in the Fourth India-Japan Universities Forum, which took place on November 15, 2025, in Hyderabad, India. The event featured Toshiya Ueki, Executive Vice President, and Masahiro Yamaguchi, Vice President of Tohoku University.
Event Overview
Organized by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), this forum marked the fourth iteration since its establishment in 2023. It aimed to enhance inter-university collaboration between Japan and India, drawing representatives from 37 Indian universities, 36 Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as 12 Japanese companies and organizations.
Commemoration of Science and Technology Exchange
The year 2025 has been designated as the ‘Japan India Science Technology and Innovation Exchange Year’, commemorating the 40th anniversary of cooperative agreements in science and technology between the two nations. Central to the discussions were themes of brain circulation and the utilization of young talent between Japan and India.
Forum Structure
The forum comprised three main segments. The opening featured remarks from several dignitaries, including the president of the JST and ambassadors to India. The second segment consisted of roundtable discussions among university representatives, focusing on biotechnology and enhancing research collaboration, which was the specific interest of Ueki and Yamaguchi’s group.
Individual Meetings
In the final segment, delegates from Tohoku University engaged in individual meetings with representatives from five Indian institutions: the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Ropar. Discussions during these meetings focused on strategies to strengthen cooperative initiatives and research collaboration policies.

The forum concluded by emphasizing the potential for collaboration in the higher education sector between Japan and India. Tohoku University aims to continue its efforts in fostering cooperation with Indian higher education institutions.
