Nihon Hidankyo Nobel Peace Prize Commemorative Lecture: Insights from an International Student at Waseda University

On November 6, 2025, Waseda University hosted the Nihon Hidankyo Nobel Peace Prize Commemorative Lecture as part of its 150th Anniversary Project. The event featured prominent alumni Satoshi Tanaka and Jiro Hamasumi, who shared their experiences as survivors of atomic bombings. This lecture recognized the Japan Confederation of A-and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, known as Nihon Hidankyo, which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024.

Welcoming Remarks

During the lecture, Aiji Tanaka, President of Waseda University and Executive Board Member of Nihon Hidankyo, welcomed the speakers. Their addresses focused on the importance of Japan’s commitment to promoting a nuclear-free world through the perspectives of atomic bomb survivors. Both Tanaka and Hamasumi emphasized the continuing relevance of peace in light of historical nuclear tragedies.

Panel Discussion

The event included individual speeches and a panel discussion that featured Keita Takagaki, a recent Waseda graduate and former youth representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Panel discussions addressed topics such as the abolition of nuclear weapons and future initiatives to support Hibakusha, both within Japan and on a global scale.

International students attending the lecture gained insights into the historical challenges posed by nuclear weapons and their lasting impacts on individuals and societies. The discussions highlighted the importance of understanding current world events and the role of younger generations in advocating for change.
