XMUM Student Liu Zhongze Claims Gold at Malaysia-Japan Research Competition 2025

A student from the School of Computing and Data Science at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), Liu Zhongze, has been awarded the Gold Award at the Malaysia-Japan Research Competition (MJL–JACTIM 2025). Alongside advisors Dr. Burra Venkata Durga Kumar, Dr. Zamratul Asyikin Binti Amran, and Dr. Teh Jia Yew, Liu received a cash prize of RM 1,500 for his project.

Competition Details

The competition took place on October 14, 2025, at the Grand Petra Hall, Residency UTMKL, and was organized by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Liu’s project, titled “Smart Farm Monitoring System: An Intelligent 3D Agricultural Management Platform,” presents a novel real-time 3D agricultural digital twin. The system employs OpenGL 4.6 rendering, L-System plant modeling, and AI-driven sensor fusion, allowing for the simulation of over 10,000 plant instances at more than 60 frames per second, while using less than 512 MB of memory.

Project Significance

This advancement aims to tackle existing challenges in achieving real-time simulation within digital agriculture solutions. Preliminary experimental results indicate potential benefits, including a reduction of up to 30% in water usage, 25% in fertilizer application, and a 15% decrease in crop loss.

About the Competition

The Malaysia-Japan Research Competition is an annual event that encourages innovative research initiatives among undergraduate and postgraduate students from UTM and other institutions. Participants are tasked with demonstrating research that supports sustainable and inclusive advancements through multiple stages of submission and presentation.
