Waseda University Increases Global Competitiveness Through Strategic Policy Committee Meeting

Waseda University recently convened its second Strategic Policy Committee Meeting of the fiscal year on October 9, 2025, with the objective of enhancing its global competitiveness. The meeting focused on promoting international intellectual exchange and advancing the university’s educational and research initiatives as part of its 150th Anniversary Project, which emphasizes Global Research, Global Education, and Global Citizenship.

The forum aimed to gather insights from external experts regarding strategies to strengthen Waseda’s standing in the international academic community. Notable attendees included Professor Peter Salovey, former president of Yale University; Professor Gil Latz, former vice provost for global strategies at Ohio State University; Glen S. Fukushima, vice chair of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation; along with various academic and business leaders.
Morning Session Discussions
In the morning session, participants engaged in discussions on Waseda’s research strategy, led by President Aiji Tanaka. This was followed by presentations on entrepreneurship initiatives from Waseda University Ventures, leading to a question-and-answer session that fostered an exchange of ideas among both experts and university representatives.
Afternoon Tour of Nishi-Waseda Campus
The afternoon segment featured a tour of the Nishi-Waseda Campus, where advisors visited research facilities including Buildings 120 and 121. Conversations with faculty and students centered on the academic environment and existing challenges facing the education system.
Wrap-Up Discussion
The meeting concluded with a wrap-up discussion, during which visiting advisors offered feedback on the proceedings. This input was considered essential, covering topics such as enhancing support systems for entrepreneurship and startups, improving research and development frameworks, attracting international researchers, and promoting study abroad programs.
