Tsinghua University Professor He Jinliang Awarded 2025 Richard R. Stoddard Award for Excellence in Lightning Protection Technology

Tsinghua University Professor He Jinliang has been honored with the 2025 Richard R. Stoddard Award for Outstanding Performance by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This accolade was announced at the IEEE’s international symposium focused on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Signal, and Power Integrity, recognizing his substantial contributions to lightning protection technology, which encompass both theoretical advancements and practical innovations.
Research Focus
As the director of the Institute of High Voltage and Insulation Technology at Tsinghua University, Professor He has concentrated his research on power transmission technologies. His work includes the development of electromagnetic transient protection systems for extra- and ultra-high voltage systems, as well as large-capacity underground power transmission technologies such as gas-insulated transmission lines and recyclable power cables.
Award Recognition
Throughout his career, He Jinliang has received multiple prestigious awards. These honors include the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, the Global Energy Prize, the IEEE Herman Halperin Electric Transmission and Distribution Award, and the IEEE Technical Achievement Award. Additionally, he has been recognized with the Hoshino Prize, the Rudolf Heinrich Golde Award, the CIGRE Distinguished Member Award, and the China Electric Power Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award.
Research Achievements
His research achievements are further highlighted by two second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award and a second prize in the National Technology Invention Award. He has also earned several accolades at the provincial, ministerial, and industry association levels, including the WIPO National Award for Inventors and the IET E&T Innovation Award.
The Richard R. Stoddard Award
The Richard R. Stoddard Award is regarded as the highest honor within the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Society. It is awarded annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of electromagnetic compatibility technology or the resolution of associated socio-technological challenges. Established in 1979, the award is conferred to only one recipient worldwide each year.
