“SMU Global Summer Programme Celebrates 10 Years with Record Participation”

The Singapore Management University (SMU) has marked the 10th anniversary of its Global Summer Programme (GSP), which reported a record participation of 347 students from 41 different nationalities. The program, held from June 23 to August 1, 2025, has been recognized for its growth as a platform for cross-cultural learning and collaboration, now featuring two full sessions to meet increasing global interest.

Milestone Celebrations

This milestone aligns with SMU’s 25th anniversary and the third anniversary of its Centre for Global Education & Opportunities.

Transformative Leadership

Professor Alan Chan, Provost of SMU, described the transformation of the GSP since its inception in 2015, noting its evolution from a single summer course into an expansive program designed to prepare students for critical thinking, global connections, and effective leadership in a landscape shaped by advancements in technology and geopolitical dynamics.

Focused Objectives

Dr. Navin Rajagobal, Senior Director for SMU Academic Services and Operations, highlighted the program’s objective of providing students with a global perspective while also emphasizing local relevance. Rick Tay, Head of the Centre for Global Education & Opportunities, reiterated the commitment to cultivating globally minded talent and providing students with further opportunities to engage with both Singapore and the international community.

Thematic Focus

The theme for this year’s program, “Future and Global Ready: Skills & Trends for the Next Decade,” focused on the significant changes contemporary graduates must navigate, including the emergence of artificial intelligence, sustainability challenges, and evolving geopolitical landscapes. The program featured insights from industry leaders in panel discussions, addressing valuable skills sought by employers, particularly in areas related to sustainability, finance, and adaptability to technological changes.

Interactive Learning

Participants engaged in hands-on workshops and industry visits, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Activities included sessions on traditional arts and workshops exploring emerging technologies such as 3D printing.

Future Directions

Future plans for the GSP include an expansion of the curriculum and strengthening industry connections to enhance the program’s relevance in a dynamic global context. The anniversary celebration concluded with an emphasis on sustained dialogue and learning that will influence the next decade.
