International Students at HUST Discover the Evolution of Chinese Medicine

On June 5, nearly 100 international students from the Tongji Medical College at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) attended a lecture titled “The Development of Chinese Medicine – From Shennong to Artemisinin,” delivered by Professor Wu Tongbo.
Discover China Program
This lecture is part of the “Discover China” program, which aims to enhance international students’ understanding of Chinese culture and society. The program resumed this year after a brief hiatus, focusing on the modernization of China’s medical and healthcare system.
Overview of Chinese Medicine
Professor Wu presented an overview of the historical evolution of Chinese medicine, beginning with ancient herbal practices associated with Shennong, a legendary figure in Chinese mythology. He highlighted the importance of the Silk Road in the medicine trade and discussed the influence of the *Compendium of Materia Medica*, noting the enduring impact of traditional medicine on modern healthcare.
Facilitation of Discussions
The presentation facilitated discussions among participants regarding the modernization and global promotion of traditional Chinese medicine. Faculty members from the School of Pharmacy and representatives from the Public Relations Office also attended the event.
Future of the Program
The “Discover China” series is scheduled to continue in 2025, with additional lectures aimed at providing international students with further insights into Chinese culture and practices.
