Zhejiang University and Khalifa University Strengthen Collaboration with New Joint Initiatives

On April 11, MA Yanming, President of Zhejiang University, conducted a meeting with Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, and his delegation at the Zijingang Campus. This event represented a significant development in the ongoing partnership between these two educational institutions.

Meeting Highlights

During the meeting, President Ma acknowledged Khalifa University as a vital partner in the Middle East and noted the advancements achieved in their collaborative efforts since the inception of their partnership one year ago. These advancements include faculty and student exchanges, along with joint research initiatives. Ma expressed hopes for further collaboration in areas such as talent development, joint research and development in communication technologies, and innovations in intelligent healthcare systems.

Commitment to Collaboration

President Al Hajri commended the reception received and reaffirmed Khalifa University’s commitment to the partnership. He highlighted the compatible educational philosophies of both institutions and identified considerable opportunities for future collaboration. Al Hajri stressed the need to enhance faculty and student mobility, broaden research cooperation, and foster intercultural understanding, particularly by encouraging Emirati youth to pursue studies in China. He noted the potential for the partnership to address global sustainability challenges.

Significant Agreements Signed

The meeting concluded with the signing of two significant agreements: a joint training program and the establishment of a 6G Joint Laboratory. Additionally, President Al Hajri endorsed the Joint Statement of Global University Leaders on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development initiated by Zhejiang University. This endeavor now includes nearly 70 universities across over 30 countries and regions, all committed to working towards a sustainable future.

Future Collaboration Plans

Furthermore, ZJU Vice President CHEN Gang and Ashraf Al Najdawi, Acting Vice President for External Relations at Khalifa University, presented plans for future scientific research collaboration and sustainable development initiatives between the universities. Representatives from various departments at Zhejiang University, including the Office of Global Engagement, the Office of SciTech Research, the College of Information Science & Electronic Engineering, and the First Affiliated Hospital of the Zhejiang University School of Medicine were also present for the discussions.

Tour of Facilities

As part of their visit, President Al Hajri and his delegation toured several facilities, such as the ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center, the State Key Laboratory of Fluid Power Transmission & Mechatronic Systems, and DEEP Robotics. This tour aimed to provide insights into Zhejiang University’s research capabilities and its entrepreneurial and innovative ecosystem.
