President Nagata Fosters Collaborative Partnerships in Ghana for University of Tsukuba

On February 27, President Kyosuke Nagata of the University of Tsukuba engaged in discussions with President Johnson Nyarko Boampong of the University of Cape Coast at the university’s office in Accra. The conversations centered on potential collaborations between the two institutions. In addition, President Nagata visited the JICA Ghana Office, where he met with Director Momoko Suzuki to explore opportunities for future cooperation and partnerships.
Courtesy Call to the Japanese Ambassador
President Nagata’s visit also included a courtesy call to H.E. Yoshimoto Hiroshi, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ghana, at the ambassador’s residence. During this meeting, he reaffirmed the University of Tsukuba’s commitment to contribute to Ghana’s development and sought the ambassador’s support for the university’s initiatives in the country.
Memorandum of Understanding with University of Ghana
On February 28, a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning academic exchange was held with the University of Ghana, followed by a symposium at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. This institute holds historical importance as the location where Dr. Hideyo Noguchi passed away while conducting research on yellow fever, and it was established with support from the Japanese government.
Symposium and Keynote Lectures
The symposium commenced with opening remarks from Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Director of the Noguchi Institute, who provided an introduction to the University of Ghana. President Nagata then delivered his opening remarks and presented a keynote lecture titled “From Molecular Biology to Virus Control.” Dr. Osamu Ohneda, Director-General of the Bureau of Global Initiatives at the University of Tsukuba, also introduced the university during the event.
Research Presentations
The second session featured presentations by Professor Hiromichi Suzuki of the Institute of Medicine at the University of Tsukuba, who spoke on “Simultaneously Achieving the Development of In Vitro Diagnostic Reagents and Human Resource Training.” Professor Masao Ichikawa, also from the Institute of Medicine and a specialist in public health, presented his research on “Preventing Child Burn Injuries in Mongolia: Translating Public Health Research into Practice.” Additionally, researchers from the Noguchi Institute discussed their projects, which included proposals for an “HIV Cure Research and Training Program at the University of Ghana” and the topic of “Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance in Common Bacterial Isolates in Ghana.”
First TUAN Ghana Alumni Reunion
In the evening, the first TUAN Ghana Alumni Reunion was held at the African Regent Hotel, attended by President Nagata, Dr. Ohneda, and various alumni from across Ghana.
Future of Academic Collaboration
The University of Tsukuba aims to enhance its international contributions as it continues to strengthen academic exchanges with institutions in Ghana.
