Chula University Hosts 2025 Chinese New Year Celebration: “Farewell to the Year of the Dragon, Welcome the Year of the Snake”

Chulalongkorn University hosted a Chinese New Year celebration for 2025 on January 21, 2025. The event, themed “Farewell to the Year of the Dragon, Welcome the Year of the Snake,” was organized by the Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts. It took place at the Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building and was attended by over 200 participants.

Event Highlights

Notable figures present at the celebration included Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University; Associate Professor Dr. Siridej Sujiva and Associate Professor Dr. Palanee Ammaranond, both Vice Presidents; and Associate Professor Dr. Suradech Chotiudompant, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The event commenced with a lion dance performance, followed by opening remarks from Associate Professor Dr. Siridej Sujiva.

Cultural Performances

University administrators participated in the tradition of receiving symbolic oranges from the Confucius Institute, followed by a group photo session. The program featured eight performances, including a rendition of “Tan Yuan Ren Chang Jiu” by students from the Faculty of Arts, a guzheng performance paired with dance, a singing performance by teachers from the Confucius Institute, a Chinese talk show conducted by engineering students, a Chinese brush art demonstration, a Peking opera face-changing act, and a kung fu dance performed by the Haitilao troupe.

New Year Wishes and Cuisine

During the celebration, Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat expressed New Year wishes to attendees and joined in picture-taking activities. Guests were treated to a selection of Chinese dishes, featuring specialties from Hunan, Xi’an, Dalian, and Sichuan cuisines, as well as Mala Tang.
